Bettas in pet stores are "loss leaders," meaning that they cost more to make than to sell, leading to a loss in profit Petco makes its true profit based on what you buy with the fish (tanks, filters, food, decor, etc) I do think you had good intentions, but I think that as long as there is demand for fish, pet stores like Petco and PetSmart will continue to restock
